So Christmas is a week away and time has slipped by. We all get sidetracked, especially during this time of year. As a mom, I fully understand the convenience of shopping online rather in store (I really didn’t get the idea of online shopping until I tried shopping with a toddler). So what’s a mom to do when shipping cutoffs are approaching and you need to get gifts for under the tree?
Don’t worry! There is still time to get what you need accomplished. Having worked in retail and e-commerce for years, I know the secrets of online shopping with a deadline. This is the final push for retailers, which can mean big savings for you. Here are a few last minute holiday shopping secrets and tips:
Free Shipping Day. Yes, there is such a thing. Free shipping day is December 18 and [typically] 1,000+ participating merchants offer free shipping (no minimum) plus delivery by Christmas Eve to all orders shipped within the continental US.
E-Gift cards. Many online retailers offer gift cards that can be delivered via email. This is a good option for friend and/or extended family. Just email them the gift card, or email it to yourself, print it out, and pop it in a card. TIP: Shopping for the girl who has everything? Get her a Stitch Fix Gift Card and give her the gift of her own personal “stylist!”
Location of company. Transit times vary depending on your location and the shipping location. If you are purchasing something from a retailer based in your state, or one that has a warehouse nearby, you can usually order up until a few days before Christmas and still be okay. Same state transit times are an average of 2 days once the item ships.
Look for shipping cut-off emails. Many online retailers will send you an email letting you know the time and date in which you need to order by in order to get your item in time for Christmas. Standard shipping is starting to get cut off around this time, so try and place your order(s) ASAP.
Store pickup. It’s one of those things I think a lot of people forget about. Best Buy, Target, and Toys”R”Us are some of the retailers that offer same-day in-store pickup. If you’re like me and have an infant and toddler in tow, getting in and out of a store can be a challenge; so just running in to pick something up at the service counter is a lifesaver. TIP: Shop online through Ebates and pick up in store for cash back!
Amazon Prime. If you’re really pushing it and you have no other option than to shop online, sign up for a free trial of Prime to snag free 2-day shipping for Christmas delivery.
